Coal Road BESS
Project Overview
The Coal Road Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a flagship long-duration energy storage project designed to strengthen Queensland’s clean energy infrastructure. Located in Dumgree, Banana Shire, the project will deploy 450MW of BASF’s sodium-sulphur battery technology with a 10-hour storage duration, providing a total of 4.5GWh of dispatchable energy capacity.
Engineered to support the State’s growing renewable energy share, the system will absorb excess solar and wind power during low-demand periods and release it back to the grid when needed—helping to stabilise supply, reduce emissions, and future-proof Queensland’s energy system.
With a total estimated cost of A$1.2 billion, the project represents a significant investment in next-generation grid resilience and regional development.
Key benefits include:
- 450MW x 10hr capacity – equivalent to powering over 400,000 homes during peak periods
- BASF sodium-sulphur battery technology – fire safe, scalable, and cost-effective
- Zero-emission firming capacity – enabling greater renewable energy integration
- Local employment – up to 100 jobs during construction and 5+ long-term roles
- Regional economic stimulus – including procurement, training, and infrastructure investment
