Project Southern
Project Overview
Project Southern is a landmark renewable energy development by Released Energy, located off the coast of Portland, Victoria. This innovative initiative will deploy a 1GW wave energy system using OceanSwell Energy’s advanced marine technology to harness the Southern Ocean’s powerful and consistent wave patterns.
With a projected investment of A$2.344 billion, Project Southern is designed to deliver zero-emission, electricity while showcasing the scalability and resilience of ocean energy in Australia’s transition to clean power.
Currently undergoing a Technology Review, the project will integrate offshore wave energy capture with onshore grid connection and storage infrastructure. Once complete, it will provide dispatchable renewable power with low environmental and visual impact.
Key benefits include:
- 1GW of wave energy capacity – enough to power over 1 million homes
- OceanSwell’s technology – engineered for durability and efficiency
- Zero-emissions and ocean-based – ideal for Australia’s coastal energy needs
- Local and regional economic benefits – from construction to long-term operation
- Supports grid stability and renewable firming in Victoria’s south-wes
As the project advances through its development and feasibility phases, Released Energy will work closely with Traditional Custodians, local governments, and regional stakeholders. Formal community engagement and consultation will commence as we move into the environmental approvals and permitting stages.
